The Sanctuary Cross is mounted high in the Altar area. This draws your attention upward as if to the heavens .  "I will lift up mine eyes to the mountains from whence shall my help come from"
The whole piece begins with a small element in a combined shape of star and cross. This moves outward in eight small "bursts" of light leading to the main star detail that is born in completion by the Cross.
The star is the sign that lead the Magi to the Christ Child.  Matthew 2:1 9b-11
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the time of King Herod. Magi from the East came to Jerusalem and asked "Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews?  We saw his star in the East and have come to worship Him" .
They went on there way and the the star they had seen in the East went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was...they saw the child with his mother  Mary and they bowed down and worshipped him. They opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incence and of myrrh.
The Cross is mounted with three lag bolts. These lag bolts are covered with medalions that contain the star burst elements and a copper piece that is a combined shape of a cross and a star. These copper pieces represent the wounds of Christ.
Psalm 22: 16b
"...a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet"
