The bookcases are designed around the Golden Proportion Rectangle a ratio of 1:~1.618
The rectangle in orange is based on the height of the left entry way, which is 8 feet, and a 5" Crown Molding.
To keep the bookcase within the boundaries of the rectangle-The top carcase becomes
52 7/16 inches wide and 56 11/16" inches high- The depth of the top case is 12" outside dimensions. The inside dimensions will be 10.5 inches. These are the dimensions without the Crown Molding or 3/4 molding along it's bases.
The lower case as determined by the 1:1.618 ration becomes 34 5/16" in height and 55 7/17" wide- I made the lower case a bit broader in depth. Inside depth will be 15.75-outside depth 17.25- Again these dimensions are without the base molding or 3/4 molding around the top
of the lower case. Overall maximum dimension for the left cabinet are: 8 feet 5 inches high. 18 3/4 deep and 62 7/16 inches wide-The widest portion being the crown molding at the top.
It is not possible to design a second case for the right side in a pure Golden Rectangle proportion without changing the height from the first. So I decided to keep the heights and depths of the right cabinet the same but increase the widths by 1 foot. As it turns out the space on either side of the base of the left side cabinet is 6 3/16". When I applied that dimension to the right side spacing the resulting width of the cabinet became 1 foot wider than that of the left. I think it's a good compromise without loosing an acceptable sense of proportion.
Over all exterior widths of the right side cabinet-Based on the molding profiles is: 74 7/16" for the Crown molding and 70 7/16" across the base.
The left cabinet base resulted in a set of the three doors, The right side with four. These could be changed but I think the resulting widths lend pleasing proportions.
For the left side cabinet, I would have the left and center doors hing on the left and right door hinge on the right
For the right side cabinet, I would have the two center doors hinge left and right respectively and and an identical operation for the out side doors.
Although the profile may not be exactly as shown, the crown molding will be 5 inches high and extend 5 inches past the case on either side
The sides will be frame and panel constrcution with inset moldings.
This is the type of construction I used on the
