Nearly ten years ago I received a commission to build a large cross for Washtenaw Christian Academy.
This cross was made from Red Oak and measures 29"x 48"x 3". Later I re sized this design to a smaller version- 24" by 14.5" and have since made numerous crosses in this basic style.
In the last few years I have added some new designs to these wall crosses. These new designs are based on a variety of scripture passages, hymns, songs, and poems.
This lenten season these designs will be on display in the Fellowship Hall of University Lutheran Chapel, located at 1511 Washtenaw Ave. on the University of Michigan Campus.
If you get a chance to see the cross display, I invite you to stop by the Chapel's coffee shop- The Common Cup which is located in the lower level of the Chapel. This coffee shop offers top-notch locally roasted coffees, teas and frozen drinks.
It was given to the school as a gift from the graduating class of 2001. The original design came from a cross that hangs in First Methodist Church of Saline Michigan. The unknown designer and builder was apparently a past member of the church. My version of his design has a darker stain than the original but I attempted to retain all other design elements.
The crosses will be on display from March 6 through April 30.
