During the Summer of 2024 I was able to add some metalworking machines to my shop.
A Milling Machine and a Lathe
The Milling Machine is a Smithy MI-409MZ. The motor runs as a single phase 220v.
The lathe is a 1942 South Bend 9" model. The motor runs as a single phase 110v.
I am in debt to my friend and neighbor-Steve Pierce who has a truck with a lift gate that made it possible to move and deliver this Lathe and the Milling Machine above to my Ypsilanti shop.
Here is the lathe loaded into Steve's truck ready to move from it's South Lyon, Michigan location to my shop.
Steve most skillfully backed his truck between my shop and the neighboring building.
Steve positioned the truck so his liftgate would lower the lathe perfectly inside my shop..
The lathe was built in 1942 for the War effort.
The lathe was shipped and first used at the Ford Motor Co Highland Park Plant July 1 1942.
The seller of this lathe started to restore the machine but decided to sell it to make room for other projects.
I will start by cleaning up the unrestored surfaces then perhaps paint them to match what the previous owner had started.
