Circle-U Art Deco Table

Top-Maple(Bird's Eye or Clear)
Base-Black Lacquer
The first step in fabrication is making the forms for the U and the Circle.  Several years ago I made some tables that wrapped around a 24" diameter support pole.
I had two of the semi-circles still in my shop. I used these to make the arches for the "U" lamination form.
I built a jig to make the arch forms.
I cut the outline on the bandsaw-keeping the cut about 1/8th inch wide of the line.
Then I screwed both roughed out semicircles together and reattached the jig.
I routed the outside edges using a 2" pattern cutting bit.
I changed bits and cut an inside edge.
A return to the 2" pattern cutting bit finished off the insde edge on both pieces.
Now for a whole lotta math-----To get the shape and size of the "U" I worked the top and bottom pieces to the middle. I knew the overall height had to be 30.5"  As the base and the Top are each 1.5 inches thick I subtracted their combined thicknesses to get the available height space for the U/Circle combination. The resulting height space is  27.5"    The smallest I could make the circle was 1" thick with a 12" inside diameter, and 14" outside diameter. To get the Circle to intersect the U at a pleasing location-The U" height has to be "21".Then I took the specified width of the top of the "U" which is 36" to make my arc I swung an 18" arc from the center of the top of the "U" to set the height of the U and then a second arc of  10.5" to set the outside width. At the point those to arcs intersect is where I trimmed the sides to get the "U" shape.
